Wine Press

One of the first contraptions for winemaking that I built was this wine press. The frame is built of a couple of 4x4 posts and 4x6 cross beams held together with some beam hangers and straps. The basket is made from some 1x2 oak pieces strapped with some framing straps, slightly bent in a vice every two inches. My press pan is cut from the head of a 30 gallon wine barrel and the whole thing functions with the use of a 6 ton hydraulic jack which pushes varying lengths of steel pipe connected to a press plate made of 2x6's.

The platform pulls off and hangs from the posts and the plywood feet fold in to the legs to make the press a svelt 5" wide when stowed for the season.
